Modulation Systems – Input Polarizer

The performance of our modulators in particular the extinction ratio and transmission, are dependent on proper alignment of the laser beam and its polarization.

The laser beam alignment with respect to the crystal aperture is easily accomplished with our modulator mount and alignment tool (see Conoptics Alignment Procedure).

The alignment of the polarization axis to the crystal axis is accomplished with the driver’s bias supply and a photo detector.

Once the alignment process has been optimized, the transmission (bandwidth) is dependent on the purity of the laser beam. One of the benefits of utilizing our Input Polarizer is to improve the purity of the laser beam entering the pockel-cell. Frequently, this is degraded by using optics (mirrors, collimators, wave-plates etc) up-stream for the pockel-cell. Alignment is easily accomplished by markers placed on the Input Polarizer and Pockel Cell Housing.
